Bread of Life...

Bread is the Staff of Life In other words, bread is a basic, sustaining food. Even if we had nothing else to eat, most of us would be grateful to fill our stomachs with bread. It is fitting, then, that Bradford Food Pantry should use bread as our main symbol. But there is another, more important reason for using this symbol to represent our service to the community. Simply put, it reminds us of Jesus. How? Jesus said this of himself: I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst” (John 6:35). In these words, Jesus makes a very powerful promise: he will fill and nourish us spiritually, just as bread will meet our basic physical need for food.

Life is tough and sometimes it throws us for a loop. One day we have a job, a place to stay, clean clothes to wear and plenty of food on our table. Then, sometimes  suddenly, we wake up another day only to find ourselves without a job and

wondering where we will get the money to pay our bills and buy even a loaf bread. Maybe for you, today is that day. If so, we are truly sorry, but also glad that you found us. As an emergency resource, we feel honored to help our neighbors, like you, who might otherwise go without. And, as followers of Jesus, we feel equally blessed to share with you the beautiful promises of Jesus.

Of these promises the most precious is this: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him” (John 3:16-17). The promise? Life that lasts forever! How do we get that? By putting our trust in Jesus and believing that his death on a cross was God’s way to punish all the sins of the world and to save sinners from going to hell when they die. When we understand and accept the truth that Jesus died for our sins and wants to save us, this truth is as welcome to our starving souls as a fresh loaf of bread is to our famished bodies.
